Ductless HVAC Systems

How do ductless heating and cooling systems work?

Most modern homes have duct-based HVAC systems that use an outdoor unit for air conditioning and a furnace for heating. Those units push heated or cooled air through a duct system that’s set up throughout the house. Ductless heating and cooling systems, simply put, require no ducts. The system consists of a condensing unit outside the house and indoor units mounted on the wall or ceiling in one or more rooms. The indoor units are responsible for distributing cooled or heated air into the home. The outdoor unit could be bought for cooling purposes only or as a heat pump for both heating and cooling.

When people are looking for a way to have a more balanced climate throughout their home but don’t want the trouble of reconfiguring their current system, they find mini-split systems are the answer to their problem. Here are some common reasons people go ductless:

  • Too cold/warm at one end of house
  • Temperature difference between floors
  • Room additions
  • Conditioning for garage/barn
